The Sustainable Cosmetics Summit returns to NYC in May 2017
This Spring, Organic Monitor is hosting the North American edition of the event in New York City. Presentations will cover topics ranging from plant-based ingredients, ecologically friendly packaging materials, and natural trends in the personal care and beauty market.

The eighth edition of the Sustainable Cosmetics Summit is set to take place May 3 – 5 at the Park Central Hotel on 7th Avenue. And Amarjit Sahota, who has put the event together believes that “by focusing on green ingredients and packaging, cosmetic and personal care companies should be able to make greater strides in reducing their environmental impacts.”

Ingredients

Personal care and cosmetic ingredients that are sourced from nature, inspired by nature, bio-based, etc. are more common and more popular as natural beauty continues to gain traction in the mainstream marketplace.

All the while “new sources of green cosmetic ingredients are emerging: marine algae, food byproducts, and new technologies,” as a press release announcing the upcoming SCS notes. At the event, presentations will cover ingredients from novel sources like tobacco as well as ingredient alternatives to fraught inputs like palm oil.

Mark Dorfman, who specializes in biomimetic chemistry, will speak about how the forms and functions found in nature can inspire ingredient and process development.  Lawyer Angela Diesch is set to discuss claims, marketing, and regulatory issues as they pertain to natural and organic beauty products.

Packaging

The event will include a presentation on packaging materials like biopolymers, while the broader packaging session will look at the environmental impact of packaging waste as well as how companies can assess and limit their “packaging footprint.”

Speakers covering topics of sustainability and CSR include, “Nancy Mahon from Estee Lauder Companies [who] will share the company’s experiences with sustainability, [and] Robert Keen, CEO of Weleda North America, [who] will explain how brands can make a social difference,” according to the release.
