Applied DNA Sciences to grow its cosmetics, fragrances, and personal care business
The security solutions company uses botanical-DNA based tools to tag, track, and trace products for an array of industries. Now with the hire of a personal care supply chain management expert, the company is set to expand its engagement with the industry.

This week the Stony Brook, New York–based company announced that Barbara Brockway has accepted the role of Director of Personal Care.

Besides her experience in supply chain management, Brockway is also well versed in cosmetics formulation, food science, and branding, according to the company bio included in the statement announcing her appointment.

And, as the company notes in its statement, “Dr. Brockway is often called upon by companies and organizations for collaborative projects on reimagining the future of personal care as consumers become more conscious about sustainability and proof of origin.”

Biotech

Applied DNA Sciences uses biotech and DNA for security. The company offers solutions to its clients for three basic purposes: supply chain protection, brand protection, and law enforcement.

And it’s a technology that could well be the future of the security industry. “Traceable tamper-proof technologies are badly in need today and have the potential to become universal if affordable and proven to be reliable,” Kantha Shelke, Ph.D., scientist and principal at Corvus Blue LLC told Cosmetics Design last year when Applied DNA Sciences first brought the DNA solutions to market.

“Traceability, she told this publication, “even with the most disciplined and documented supply chains can be dicey, especially in the case of products with many ingredients or many parts.”

With a technology known as SigNature DNA marking, the company helps “maintain identity and proper course of legitimate goods throughout the supply chain, from cradle to end use,” explains the Applied DNA Sciences site. And, the company offers that same product to brands seeking to mitigate counterfeiting. With it, product is said to be quickly and definitively authenticated.

Business

Brockway holds two degrees from the University of Kent, a PhD in Biochemistry and a BSc. She also brings with her the experience of having been Scientific Advisor at IMCD, Laboratory Manager at Huntsman, Director of R&D and Marketing at The Collaborative Group, Head of Applied Research at The Body Shop International, a past president of the Society of Cosmetic Scientists, a trustee on The Body Shop Foundation, and a Governor of Chichester University, according to the bio circulated by Applied DNA Sciences.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Brockway join Applied DNA Sciences at a time where there is significant need for consumers to better understand the origin of the personal care products they buy,” James Hayward, CEO and president of Applied DNA Sciences, tells the press.

“Through the development of partnerships with personal care companies, Dr. Brockway is poised to bring greater confidence to consumers and companies alike,” he adds, noting that “the integration of personal care complements our expansion into pharmaceutics, markets that are regulated by the FDA, in which authenticity and supply chain transparency are essential.”
