Lonza wins award for self-emulsifiers

Swiss ingredients company Lonza has been awarded with Personal Care Chemicals & Intermediates Technology Innovation of the Year Award at the third annual Excellence in Industrial Technologies Banquet, reports Simon Pitman.

Lonza received the Frost & Sullivan award for developing the path breaking Natrulon DermaSphere Oleosome Technology. The self-emulsifying technology has been developed in conjunction with SemBioSys Genetics.

The technology utilises novel constituents - oleosomes - which facilitate the formulation of various cosmetic and personal care products with unique properties at competitive manufacturing costs.

Lonza's natural and multi-functional technology combines the benefits of an emollient, emulsifier, and a moisturiser in a single product - a fact that many formulators appreciate as it can be used to save time and costs.

"The mild and non-sensitive nature of this product technology facilitates the formulation of cosmetic solutions at low costs via cold processing. This product constitutes the entire oil phase in the cosmetic emulsion and eases formulation," said Frost & Sullivan research analyst Kasturi Nadkarny.

Oleosome technology is composed of a natural oil-in-water emulsion that originates from plant oilseeds, and is made up of a unique protein called 'Oleosin'. The oleosome emulsion is highly flexible and offers several functionalities such as emolliency, emulsification, and moisturization, in addition to being a carrier-delivery system for small active molecules.

"Lonza's Natrulon DermaSphere Oleosome represents a major breakthrough in cosmetic formulation technologies. In fact, it is an important milestone in the development of innovative technologies for the entire personal care segment," added Nadkarny.

Held in Florida, US, Frost & Sullivan's Excellence in Industrial Technologies Awards Banquet honours world-class companies for outstanding performance and achievements in their industries. An annual event, the banquet recognises the qualities of both individuals and companies.
