Cognis hones in on sensorial and functional qualities

Cognis has unveiled two innovations aimed at the wellness trend for the personal care category at the 52nd SEPAWA congress, held in Germany last week. The new ideas focus on providing personal care products that provide both sensorial and functional qualities as well as convenience.

The innovations include a new model to facilitate the development of skin care products with customised textures as well as an especially mild fruit acid surfactant for skin care.

"We are constantly seeking to present new ideas for our customers in the home and personal care markets. In line with our clear focus on the global wellness trend, we will continue to develop new formulations and market ready concepts, including marketing claims, which are tailored to consumer needs," Said Richard Ridinger, vice president Cognis Care Chemicals.

An increasingly important part of personal care product development is to obtain desirable sensorial characteristics. Manufacturers stating that their products are 'pampering' or 'caring', must provide products that live up to this claim, and to do that they must ensure that the consumer has the right experience during use, Cognis claims.

The company's new two-dimensional model tackles this problem, allowing manufacturers the right testing model to develop the desired characteristics and performance.

To meet these aims the model addresses both the sensorial and physical parameters of the formulation. This means that the skin feel as well as the viscosity of the formulation can be fine tuned according to expectations.

As well as perfecting existing formulations, the model also allows for the creation of novel textures for new products that are being developed around emerging market trends.

The company's moisturising fruit acid surfacent, Plantapon LC 7, is an example of how the company is striving towards bringing ingredients with improved functionality to the market.

As well as its moisturising properties, it is said to have a level of mildness that surpasses other similar ingredients on the market. For this reason, Cognis says that it will be particularly useful in gentle skin care formulations, especially those suffering from allergies and babies or in specific products such as shower gels or face washes.

It is also suitable for hair care applications, particularly shampoos. Cognis says that its analysis finds that it improves the condition of hair as well as its combability.

Its totally active state should also make it suitable for use in non-aqueous formulations such as shower and bath oils.

The latest launches from Cognis form part of a concerted effort to focus on the wellness category, currently known to be one of the fastest-growing in the industry. In August this year the company launched PA Reviviscience LS 9562 by using extract of MyroThamnus Flabellifolia, a moisturizer that works in extremes of climate.
