PCPC annual meeting focuses on impact of economic situation

The cosmetic consequences of the economic downturn will take centre stage at the annual meeting of the Personal Care Products Council (PCPC).

Taking place at the Boca Raton Resort & Club in Florida on February 24-27, the meeting is billed as an efficient and effective way for PCPC members to gain insights on trends and business opportunities.

Economic focus to discussions

One of the highlights of the meeting promises to be a consumer marketing trends panel on February 26, that will discuss the current economic climate.

Jenny Fine of Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) will moderate the session that will hone in on the impact of the economic downturn on consumer trends and ask how the beauty industry is responding.

NPD beauty industry analyst Karen Grant will be one of the experts on the panel.

PCPC said Grant is regarded as the global beauty industry expert and is particularly strong on uncovering market trends, brand vulnerabilities and opportunities.

Grant recently commented on the impact of the economic climate on the cosmetics market.

Make-up opportunities remain

In a report on the make-up market published this week the NPD analyst said plenty of opportunities remain despite the deteriorating economic situation.

She said: “During tough economic times, consumers want affordable items, but they still want and need things that make them feel good.

“On both fronts, make-up works - as the most economically priced beauty category, make-up is the arena women can come to play and invest in themselves for little more than the price of a good lunch.”
