Professor discusses potential of 3D skin model to test cosmetic ingredients
The ban on animal testing for cosmetics ingredients introduced in Europe earlier this year has highlighted a lack of alternative testing methods. CosmeticsDesign spoke to Professor Zee Upton, from the Queensland University of Technology, whose model developed for investigating wound healing, may also be used to test cosmetic ingredients.
One of the advantages of the model is its 3 dimensional structure as it mimics real skin much better than other 2 dimensional in vitro methods. In addition, Upton explained that the model is completely free from animal-derived ingredients and is completely synthetic so there is no batch-to-batch variation.
