Almond oleosomes are natural moisturizing emulsifiers, says Botaneco

Oil-seed specialist Botaneco has launched an almond version of its oleosome product at this year’s Suppliers’ Day in New Jersey.

Hydresia Dulce is an Ecocert certified natural emulsion base made from sweet almonds Prunus dulcis.

“We originally launched two products with safflowers and have now started using sweet almond for its restorative properties for skin and hair,” explained Botaneco’s Daria Carlin Long.

Oleosomes are found in many oil bearing seeds and help store the oil that is needed for energy during germination.

Moisturizing delivery system

The Canada-based company isolates the small storage spheres which can then be used as a delivery system for other active oil-based ingredients, Long told CosmeticsDesign.

“The oleosomes themselves have moisturizing properties, plus the benefit of whatever active has been added in,” she said.

“We have experimented by loading them with vitamin E, a number of UV filters and even insect repellent.”

In addition, the oleosomes slowly release the ingredients as they dry out on contact with the skin, so they can be used when time release properties are desired, explained Long.

According to the company, Hydresia Dulce, along with the existing Hydresia and Hydresia G2, are natural, renewable replacements for hydrocarbon derived petrolatum, mineral oil and non-ionic surfactants.

Furthermore, Botaneco claims that the ingredients can be cold processed, which can speed up formulation and processing.
