Unilever joins Climate Savers Computing Initiative

Personal care manufacturer Unilever has joined the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, pledging to work on the adoption of energy-efficient PCs and servers, with the aim of reducing global computer CO2 emissions by 54 million tons per year.

Launched in June 2007, the Climate Savers Computing Initiative is a nonprofit group of eco-conscious consumers, businesses and conservation organisations which have come together in an effort to reduce the energy consumption of computers. Other members include Google, Dell, Microsoft and WWF.

Unilever previously introduced the Green IT programme in 2008, a strategy aimed at reducing the impact of IT operations on the environment.

Paolo de Sa, Unilever’s Vice President of IT said: “Our commitment to reducing energy consumption through smarter use of IT fits perfectly with our agenda. When it comes to the environment, we believe that doing the right things for the right reasons is good for our consumers, our customers and our business”.

As part of the goal to reduce CO2 emissions, Unilever will purchase high-efficiency computer equipment that meets ‘energy star’ ratings and use hibernation and sleep modes on their computer systems.
