SupplySideEast to explore market for cosmeceuticals

Cosmeceuticals is one of the areas to be explored at the ingredients tradeshow, SupplySideEast, targeting manufacturers and formulators in the cosmetics and personal care industry.

The 12th edition of the international show is taking place at Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, New Jersey from April 26-28. Cosmeceuticals is just one of the focuses of the event, which also deals with nutrition, and food and beverage.

According to the event organizers, attendance from those in the cosmetics and personal care side grow 15 percent in 2009 compared to 2008 figures. Exhibitors at the 2010 edition of the show include P L Thomas, Frutarom and Croda Health Care

Cosmeceuticals market set to boom

The market for cosmeceuticals, although somewhat of a niche category, has seen rapid growth over recent years; indeed, market researcher IBISWorld has predicted the category to attain a value of $4bn in the US by 2011.

“The development of new product categories like cosmeceuticals and dermocosmetics has grown considerably in the last five years, driven by America’s obsession with anti-aging and wellness,” said Toon Van Beeck, senior analyst with IBISWorld.

“Companies are taking the opportunity to manufacture more of these high-margin products which typically generate profits greater than the industry average of 10 percent,” he added.

Education program runs parallel to show

The event also features an education program where attendees can learn about topics such as new ingredients science and applications, regulations and market trends within the cosmeceutical sector.

The cosmeceuticals part of the program runs on the second and third days of the show, and features a variety of presentations, including one from a dermatologist guiding attendees through the latest cutting-edge natural ingredients for cosmeceuticals.

An update on EU regulations for cosmetics will be given by Georges P Bergen, a scientific and regulatory consultant from scientific consultancy firm Cantox.

Also forming part of the program will be a presentation on market trends from the director of consumer packaged goods insight at Mintel. Lyn Dornblaser identifies two types of products that the term cosmeceutical can be applied to; ingestible products that claim to have an effect on appearance, and those including food ingredients that intended for topical application.
