Carmex launches skin care line

The maker of Carmex lip balm, Carma Laboratories, has launched a skin care line in response to consumer demand.

The new skin care line consists of Carmex Healing lotion, which is intended for everyday use, and Carmex Healing Cream which the company says is designed for extremely dry or cracked skin.

“For years customers have asked us to develop a skin care product that works as well as the lip balm,” said Carma Laboratories’ president Paul Woelbing.

“We’re leveraging our 73 years of experience to bring the healing power of Carmex to skin and give our customers what they have been asking for,” he added.

Exclusive to Walgreens

Walgreens is the exclusive retailer of the products, which are available through its drugstores and online store in the US. However, a spokesperson for Carmex said the company is open to expanding distribution if the range proves popular.

“Right now the two products are exclusive to Walgreens and Walgreens.com, but if it goes well we will expand distribution to other retailers in the US and would be open to making the product available internationally,” he said.

The spokesperson said the range, which is just beginning to hit stores shelves, has had ‘fantastic feedback’ from consumers.

The Healing Lotion comes in a 5.5oz size and the Healing Cream is available in a 4oz format, with the spokesperson saying that there could potentially be additional sizes of the two formulas launched in the future.

Sustainable packaging

Carmex revamped the packaging for its iconic lip balm jar to make it more sustainable by decreasing the amount of plastic used. The bottom of the jar was made more concave, which the company claims uses 20 percent less plastic, amounting to a reduction in plastic of 70,000 pounds per year.

The spokesperson said Carmex is always looking for ways to minimize its environmental impact, highlighting the fact that the skin care products do not feature secondary packaging, helping to keep packaging to a minimum.
