Selar PA comes in two grades – one for improved transparency (Selar PA 3426R) and one for enhanced impact resistance (Selar PA 7003).
Enhanced impact resistance has been designed into the Selar resin as manufacturers are increasingly calling for stronger products, cosmetic market development manager at DuPont Cosmetic Solutions Arnaud Mastain explained.
“Brands want to know that their mascara can be dropped from a height of say 1.5m and that it isn’t going to break,” he told CosmeticsDesign.com USA at last week’s LuxePack show in Monaco.
The new resin grade can also provide a glossy, scratch resistant surface and is easier to process when compared to its predecessors due to the enhanced wall thickness distribution.
The ability to better control thickness as well as the material’s superior shock resistance allows designers to reduce the thickness of the walls by between 10 and 15 percent, he added.
Enhanced transparency
The improved transparency of Selar PA 3426R allows DuPont to position it as an alternative to glass for nail varnish packaging.
According to the company its superior transparency and chemical inertness rivals that of glass without the brittleness.
In addition, using plastic rather than glass opens up new design options, according to Mastain, as shapes and designs that would be impossible in glass are realistic with the nylon resin.
