Garnier goes green with exclusive sustainability partnership

Garnier has taken strides towards reducing waste and upping its sustainability drive having announced an exclusive partnership with green company TerraCycle.

The L’Oreal-owned brand will work with the firm that specializes in making consumer products from post-consumer materials, as part of its comprehensive sustainability efforts, which include packaging improvements and science-driven innovation.

Environmental target to reduce landfill waste

The personal care and beauty products industry accounts for approximately a third of all landfill waste, and Garnier claims to be dedicated to seeing this reduced.

According to the US-based operation, renewable, bio-derived plastics; cardboard packaging sourced from sustainably managed forests; and the use of more naturally-derived ingredients are all part of its environmental target.

Millions of pieces of waste are expected to be collected by Garnier globally for the purposes of reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills.

"Through the ambitious effort of having the Personal Care and Beauty Brigade, we look forward to making an impact on the amount of beauty and cosmetic packaging that is thrown away each year."

The Personal Care and Beauty Brigade is formed of individuals or groups who volunteer to help the sponsorship. They will aid in collecting and shipping the packaging to the TerraCycle facility, as well as educating communities to divert packaging from landfills in the future.

Commitment to sustainability

As of this year, and for the next two years, Garnier has committed to debuting new greener products over each of its brands which includes Fructis shampoo and conditioner, Fructis Style grooming and style products, Nutrisse haircolor, HerbaShine haircolor and Garnier skincare.

The first product to roll out is Garnier Fructis Pure Clean, which is a biodegradable shampoo and conditioner expected to have far-reaching impact on the hair care industry.

Pure Clean shampoo (94 percent biodegradable) and conditioner (92 percent biodegradable) are non-ecotoxic and leave behind less residue and suds.

Garnier says the weightless formulas contain no silicone, paraben or dye, and the bottles are also made of PET, the most widely recycled plastic, and includes 50 percent post consumer recycled plastics.
