According to the company, “Sonicare AirFloss is designed to make cleaning in between teeth as easy as possible while maximising plaque removal and ultimately improving gum health.”
Clinical trials
According to Philips, consumer testing showed that 86 percent of users found the product easier to use than string floss and that it removes up to 99 percent more plaque in between teeth than brushing with a manual brush alone.
An in vivo study was conducted to see the reduction of plaque and gingivitis.
Using two sets of participants with mild gingivitis, one half of 148 adults had a manual toothbrush whilst the other had the Sonicare AirFloss as well as the toothbrush.
The Modified Gingival Index was used to measure levels of gingivitis.
At baseline, gingivitis was at 1.8. At two weeks the level for users with the product was lower at 1.3 in comparison to just the manual toothbrush at 1.5, with all figures used being approximate.
Similarly, at four weeks, manual toothbrush and product users had a 1.2 MGI in comparison to users with just a toothbrush, where the level was 1.4 MGI.
In the case of plaque, the concentration of residual protein was collected, before and after use.
The baseline concentration for both sets of participants was similar at approx. 35 mg/ml.
For those using both toothbrush and Sonicare AirFloss, the concentration found after single use was significantly lower at 20 mg/ml in comparison to the manual toothbrush users at 28 mg/ml approx.
Air and water
Sonicare AirFloss works by using a rapid burst of air and water droplets to thoroughly fill up the interdental area between teeth and force plaque and bacteria out.
The rapid burst is directed using a nozzle guidance tip for targeted cleaning. Sonicare AirFloss has an ergonomical handle and angled nozzle for easy access to all areas of the mouth.
The company claims the point and one-button functionality cleans the entire mouth in less than a minute, whilst using less than one teaspoon of water for two full cleaning sessions.
“We understand the struggle that many consumers face finding time to regularly clean between their teeth,” commented Erik Hollander, senior marketing director, Philips consumer lifestyle.
“Sonicare AirFloss was developed to improve oral health with an easy-to-use device”.
As part of the Sonicare range, it is an electronic flossing device with a recommended retail price of $99 dollars in the US.
