Ban on animal testing a key topic of debate on in-cosmetics educational programme

Animal testing will play a starring role at the in-cosmetics 2012 event in Barcelona, as the show organisers announce the education programme.

Sun care has been highlighted as the main theme of the show and has prompted a seminar on sun protection; however the proposed ban on animal testing next year and the current situation has made it a key topic for debate.

Animal testing focus

The proposed ban on animal testing, due to take effect in 2013, has hit a few hurdles and there has been increased pressure throughout the industry for the European Commission to uphold this.

Regulations imposed by the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) in 2006 have led to an unprecedented need for alternatives to animal testing in Europe.

At the in-cosmetics event, in partnership with TeknoScienze Srl, the seminar, entitled, ‘Alternative (non-animal) Methods for Cosmetics Testing’, will look at the current alternatives, and will feature input from the European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM) and the Centre for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT-EU), as well as industry insight from CeeTox and AgenoLab.

“Delegates will learn more about the likelihood of the ban’s deadline being met as well as details on the processes that will make it possible,” says the show’s organiser.

Educational programme

As well as the animal testing focus, the educational programme will also look at the technical hurdles to be overcome by the increased demand for green cosmetic formulations.

Judi Beerling from Organic Monitor will highlight the major technical and formulation issues associated with natural and organic products whilst providing practical advice and solutions for cosmetics and ingredients companies, in a formulation workshop.

There are two seminars highlighted in the programme. One is ‘Spotlight on Sun Protection’, chaired by Alain Khaiat, senior international expert on cosmetics with the European Commission, and will feature some of the world’s leading sun care scientists and professionals.

Scientific seminars

The other is ‘Cosmetogenomics - At the Cutting Edge of Cosmetic Science’, chaired by Marisa Meloni, CEO of Vitroscreen and Tiziana Mennini, will endeavour to shed light into one of the most fascinating aspects of personal care technology.

The rest of the Scientific Seminars will consist of a number of presentations from key speakers, providing delegates with a concise and thorough overview of the topics.

The in-cosmetics show takes place this year at the Gran Via Fira Barcelona exhibition centre, Barcelona, on April 17-19.
