BASF launches controlled release macromolecular moisturiser

Chemicals giant BASF has launched a new active ingredient that is claimed to provide instant moisturisation properties thanks to controlled release technology.

PatcH2O is an active ingredient that targets optimal rehydration of the stratum corneum and has been developed by the company’s Beauty Creations division, which specialises in active ingredients.

In recent years the Beauty Creations division has been developing an increasing number of ingredients off the back of two particular areas of expertise – natural macromolecular and controlled release technology – both of which have both played an important part in the development of this particular ingredient.

According to BASF, the ingredient is a molecular network of natural biopolymers with a high concentration of a moisturising complex containing glycerin, serine, trehalose and urea.

Targeting two different levels of moisturisation

Perhaps its biggest selling point is the fact that it has been developed to work at two different levels, firstly components such as hyaluronic acid, alginate and pullulan form a protective film on the surface of the skin, while this in turn is loaded with moisturisation complex that is slowly released into the stratum corneum to rebalance moisture levels.

BASF researchers say that a variety of clinical studies have proven the efficacy of the ingredient, which claim that it can help to prolong hydration by binding water inside the stratum cornea, with in vitro test showing that moisturisation can be enhanced for up to 48 hours.

Clinical trials incorporated a 3 per cent dose of the ingredient into a cream, which in trials showed that volunteers perceived an improved smoothness, hydration and softness, especially when compared to a placebo formulation that was applied in the same manner by another group of volunteers.

One out of three skin care products targets hydration

“Maintaining well moisturised facial skin is the cornerstone of any skin rejuvenation regimen as good moisturization is an essential source of youth and beauty for the skin”, said Tony Jaillot, Beauty Creations Global marketing director.

"One out of three treatments on the market today features hydration claims, however very few products efficiently hydrate the skin with an immediate and remnant effect at once.”

The company says the ingredient is suitable for all types of skin applications for moisturisation, and is specifically suited to both anti-aging and dry skin care products.
