Kao plant receives certification for producing palm oil-based products

Cosmetics firm Kao has announced that its Wakayama Plant passed the requisite screening and was recognized RSPO SCCS certification, following its Kashima Plant last year.

The certification accredits attests that the plant is capable of producing, processing, and marketing products that use sustainable palm oil and palm kernel oil.

From 2013, the Kashima Plant started to purchase actual certified palm oil, and the Wakayama Plant will also begin to purchase actual certified oil; with plans to increase the number of certified plants in the Group including overseas operations, in place.

Palm oil and its derivatives are present in about 70 per cent of cosmetic products and are obtained from the flesh of the fruit of African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) and palm kernel oil is obtained by pressing oil from the kernel, or seed, of the fruit.
