Avery Dennison launches new adhesive designed for thin labels
With the pressure on to create highly sustainable packaging, lightweighting the materials used in the process is becoming increasingly important, with every aspect of the manufacturing process coming under increasing scrutiny.
One increasingly interesting area to reduce materials is to use very thin labels, but a particular challenge that packaging manufacturers have come across is to find the right kind of adhesive to support the more fragile films that are specified.
ClearCut adhesive designed for BOPP and MDO films
The Netherlands-based company’s solution to this problem is ClearCut Adhesive Technology, which the company has designed to combine with the BOPP and MDO films used for thin labels to provide enhanced sustainability and productivity, combined with the high aesthetics necessary for shelf appeal.
“Conventional thin materials have always posed a number of production challenges, including ooze, dispensing and wet-out,” said Tina Hannan, director of films, Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials.
“Converters are actively seeking more robust ‘thin’ operations, not only to reduce waste levels, and increase savings, but also to ensure higher dispensing accuracy and less downtime for equipment cleaning.”
The ClearCut adhesive has been designed to fit with the company’s BOPP and MDO films, which have been designed to maintain integrity and quality even though they are very thin and use considerably less material than conventional films used in labellng.
Enhanced conversion speed, sustainability and material use
Combined, the adhesive and the films provide reliable high-speed conversion, together with straightforward dispensing for heightened manufacturing efficiencies, the company claims.
Available in clear, white and metallized face stocks, the labels can be used on PET packaging that is squeezable, which would include a range of skin care and hair care products.
In particular it provides enhanced ‘no label applications for Global MDO film use that includes a claimed 30 per cent haze improvement, and a 100 per cent water resistance improvement compared to stand emulsion adhesives – particular beneficial properties for cosmetic and personal care products that are used in the shower or bath.
