The 'Teamcentre' software is a product lifecycle management (PLM) system which will be implemented by all teams involved in the product development processes for L’Oréal's packaging in the coming months.
According to company group operations CIO Martin Rhein, the software was selected following an extensive evaluation process which included major providers in the PLM market, because of the portfolio’s breadth and adaptability to the L’Oréal processes and data model requirements.
Rhein says the technology also brings a string of other advantages, not only to the development, but also to the manufacturing process.
Siemens reports L’Oréal’s move towards a PLM platform as part of a global trend whereby consumer goods manufacturers are moving towards more standardized and higher quality manufacturing practices.
All about sharing ideas...
L’Oréal packaging director Philippe Thuvien adds that with this particular software, sharing packaging configurations and ideas between different technical departments is far more accessible, thus helping the brand to reduce time and product costs.
“We will also be able to capture and manage our corporate know-how, creating a solid foundation for a future of innovation and growth,” Thuvien adds.
The brand's Indian subsidiary also recently implemented a 'Fiorano’s SOA platform' to form its' backplane infrastructure in an effort to improve its communications and make it easier for it to manage product launches.
Pressure to be as sustainable as it is innovative with packaging
Whilst striving to be as innovative as possible, cosmetics companies are also under increasing pressure to be as sustainable and green with their packaging.
In recent years L’Oréal has taken steps to replace old materials with those that are recycled or come from renewable resources, and it's initiatives like this that have helped the Paris-headquartered company reduce its products' impact on the environment.
