Paperboard packaging from sugar cane widely available for cosmetics brands

The sustainable packaging material is now being distributed across North America under the name Earth Pact by Veritiv in partnership with Carvajal Pulp and Paper.

In the US and Canada, Vertiv is the exclusive distributor of Earth Pact brand paperboard. And the company has rights to supply the material in Mexico, as well.

Packaging supply

Veritiv, a publically traded company, got its start 2 years back when Unisource Worldwide and the xpedx business of International Paper Company merged. The company has executive offices in Atlanta, Georgia, and operates much of its business out of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Known for offering structuring and graphic design as well as material sourcing and testing services, the distributor claims to be “material neutral.”

Which according to the Veritiv site means that the team will “research every substrate available—from essential corrugated, to progressive PaperFoam, to recycled polyethylene terephthalate, to find the right mix for [a client’s] package.”

Sustainable sourcing

Green, ethical, and sustainable are business buzz words regardless of industry, as consumers today fully expect companies to be mindful of the planet as well as the people all along the supply chain, and to give back to the communities that support production.

This latest offering from Veritiv fits with that approach. "Earth Pact is just one example of Veritiv's commitment to providing sustainable packaging solutions for the future," says Darin Tang, senior vice president of packaging solutions, in a press release about the new distribution arrangement with Carvajal Pulp and Paper.

"From new coating technologies to renewable resources, Veritiv is at the cutting edge of today's technology for sustainable packaging," he adds.

Material matters

Earth Pact paperboard is made from bagasse, the fibrous byproduct that remains after all the juice is removed from sugarcane. Veritiv boasts that it’s produced without the use of bleach or dye and comes in moisture- and grease-resistant varieties.

The company explains that the sugar cane is grown year round and harvested after 12 of 14 months.

Earth Pact paperboard is “well-suited for a variety of packaging applications in the food, cosmetics and similar industries,” according to the press release.
