Troy Corporation has announced the expansion of it natural preservative line, TroyCare LSB, in a bid to meet increasing formulation demand for more targeted natural preservation solutions.

One of the biggest challenges for natural and organic cosmetic and personal care brands has been to create products that are stable and have a viable shelf life using natural-based preservative solutions.

This has presented ingredient developers with significant challenges as synthetic preservatives have traditionally proved to be the most effective solutions, but can negatively impact product claims.

TroyCare LSB3

The addition to the TroyCare LSB line is called LSB3 and is the third preservative in the series, designed to give formulation professionals greater choice of solutions that has been developed around compatability.

The LSB3 ingredient is a predominantly organic acid preservative system that is comprised of Levulinic , Benzoic and Sorbic acids, together with a small dosing of Phenylpropanol.

According to the development team, the resulting preservative is a clear, low color liquid with very mild aroma of floral spice which at typical use levels, can easily be masked, if desired.

Broad spectrum protection

Like the rest of the range, the LSB3 solution is said to provide strong broad-spectrum protection against both bacteria and fungi, the main challenge for a range of products, from shampoos and skin care to color cosmetics.

The development team also claims that the solution allows formulations to maintain efficacy at higher pH levels, often in situations where other organic acid systems might fail.

“TroyCare LSB answers the needs of formulators and fills in the performance, compatibility, and cost-in-use gaps present with other materials,” said David Koehl, Troy’s global head of Home & Personal Care.
