Wellness Simplified: Cosmetics Design talks with Tonik founder Pip Summerville

A fair number of brands exhibiting at this year’s Indie Beauty Expo in New York City were dedicated to wellness. One such brand, Australia-based Tonik makes single-ingredient supplements. Cosmetics Design spoke with Tonik founder Pip Summerville at IBE to learn about this wellness brand that manages to epitomize current beauty and personal care ingredient trends.

Tonik got its start in 2016 and used IBE NY 2018 as a launching pad for the brand’s first vegan supplement know simply at ‘Tonik number 4’. It’s hemp seed oil, which founder Pip Summerville tells Cosmetics Design is a more sustainable alternative to fish oil.

Tonik “number 1 is organic coconut oil in a capsule,” she says; and number 2 is apple cider vinegar. “Vinegar of all varieties is having a resurgence,” says Cosmetics Design editor Deanna Utroske in this video interview with Summerville. “I’m seeing it in scalp care; I’m seeing it in skin care; talk about why it makes sense as an ingestible wellness product.”

“Ours is apple cider vinegar,” begins Summerville in response, “which does contain the mother,” a reference to the proteins, enzymes, and so-called friendly bacteria that develop in the vinegar as part of fermentation.
