In this video interview, DSM regional marketing manager Sonia Dawson discusses new prototypes for sun care and skin care.
“One of our features is really around being Hawaii-compliant,” Dawson tells Cosmetics Design editor Deanna Utroske, referencing Hawaii’s new regulation allowing only the sale of what that state calls reef-safe sun care.
“Companies,” explains Dawson “are working quickly to formulate without oxybenzone and OMC [octyl methoxycinnamate or octinoxate], to make Hawaii-compliant sunscreens…..For the show, we’ve created several different formulations: all-mineral, hybrid formulations, traditional organic sprays and lotions, and even a nice stick.”
Other new starter formulas, made with familiar DSM ingredient technologies, are inspired by K beauty and deliver not only skin care benefits (like anti-stress) but also Instagram appeal—something formulators and product developers now take into consideration. “We are in the era of Instagramable beauty,” Dawson emphasizes in an off-camera exchange with Cosmetics Design.
DSM has also been testing ingredients for skin plumping benefits, as Dawson notes, “now the conversation in beauty is really around…'how do you have volumized skin?'”
And before we sign off, the new DSM head of personal care in North America Stephen Wood drops by to share his vision for the future.
