An Indie Brand to Watch: SmartyPits, award-winning prebiotic deodorant

At last night’s Indie Beauty Innovators Awards event in Las Vegas, Nevada, SmartyPits was recognized with ICMAD’s 2019 award for Charitable Company. The brand, founded and led by Stacia Guzzo, donates both product and sales revenue to breast cancer research and survivor support.

SmartyPits is best known for its aluminum-free deodorant formulations. But like many personal care, skin care, and hair care brands innovating for the future, SmartPits formulates with a prebiotic ingredient.

“One of the reasons we do that,” explains Stacia Guzzo, founder and CEO of SmartyPits, “goes back to the science behind deodorant. Sweat is naturally odorless; it’s the bacteria on your skin that metabolizes a protein in your sweat, off gasses, and that’s what causes BO.”

“We use baking soda [or] magnesium, depending on our formula. But we also include prebiotics because that’s going to help nourish the bacteria that’s already on your skin,” Guzzo tells Cosmetics Design.
