On Friday, the Paris-based contract development and manufacturing group announced that it has acquired a first US-based business. The deal is part of the ANJAC Health & Beauty Group’s strategy to do more business in cosmetics and skin care, expressly with clean and indie beauty brands.

With this latest acquisition, the ANJAC Health & Beauty Group is truly going global. The group got its start in 2008 but is comprised of companies dating back to the 1940s, like the press-power expert Aircos and the hot-fill and liquid cosmetics maker Pascul.

8 of the group’s companies are based in France and 1, a pharmaceutical lab called Feltor is headquartered in Spain. In remarks to the press about the Cosmetix West acquisition, group CEO Aurélien Chaufour says,“We are delighted to expand our know-how in this region, which is dynamic and influences our markets.”

Buying Cosmetix West, he says, “gives rise to fantastic opportunities and synergies for the group. Each of our acquisitions offers our clients a unique proposition, be it technological, regional or sectoral.”

Indie beauty

ANJAC Health & Beauty recognizes the opportunity to work with indie beauty brands as a meaningful piece of the Cosmetix West acquisition. The group’s media release announcing the deal notes that, “Bolstered by its capacity to innovate and adapt, Cosmetix West's client portfolio includes many major indie brands; the independent local brands that are revolutionising the beauty market worldwide.”

The acquisition deal is not just a move to own a company operating in the US but to own one that’s known for its experience with indies and with forward-facing trends like clean beauty.

Clean beauty

“Cosmetix West will also bring added value to the group as it will enable it to ramp up its offering to meet the consumer expectations that brands have to address, such as clean beauty - in other words, transparent, minimalist and effective cosmetics, with a focus on naturalness,” explains the media release from ANJAC Health & Beauty.

Indeed, the Cosmetix West own about page asserts that “Clean Beauty is today’s term for what we have been doing at Cosmetix West from the beginning. Our entire beauty platform is built around using the most natural, efficacious ingredients found throughout the world. We adhere to the industry accepted clean beauty ‘no,no’ list, editing out all ingredients that could be construed to be unhealthy.”

The Cosmetix West ethos, in conjunction with the acquisition, calls attention to the fact that clean beauty has moved beyond being a consumer trend or marketing term of art; clean beauty is space where suppliers and manufacturers are now moving to own market share.
