The program launched just last year as a collaboration between INNOCOS and Beauty Heroes, celebrates beauty, wellness, and lifestyle brands and products that are sustainable and making a positive impact on the environment.

Blue Beauty is to Green Beauty as Circularity is to Sustainability. “Blue Beauty [refers to] beauty initiatives that …contribute back to the environment in a meaningful way,” as Jeannie Jarnot, Founder of Beauty Heroes has said in past remarks to Cosmetics Design. And ‘blue’ refers to Earth, which is often called the blue planet.

Beauty, wellness, and lifestyle brands are all eligible for the Blue Beauty Awards

“We believe that now is the time for us to act to protect the earth,” writes Irina Kremin, Founder of the INNOCOS BeautyInfluenceNetwork, on the awards page of the INNOCOS site.

And, “the second edition of the Blue Beauty Awards is now accepting new applications….in the form of beauty, wellness or lifestyle marketing, packaging, formula, community engagement or content.”

There are 3 basic categories for the 2021 Blue Beauty Awards: Zero Waste Beauty, Packaging Innovation, and Innovation in Environmental Impact.

Within each of those categories, brands can focus on a specific product, a content initiative, marketing strategy, packaging, an event, or other project that “contributes to creating a bluer planet,” as the online entry form explains it.

There are ingredient guidelines for Blue Beauty

Products submitted for the Blue Beauty Awards must meet the Beauty Heroes ingredient standard. Beauty Heroes is a clean beauty discovery platform with both brick-and-mortar and online retail as well as a monthly subscription box service. All the brands that Beauty Heroes sells or otherwise partners with must meet the platform’s ingredient standard.

The standard does not allow for ethoxylated ingredients, parabens, oxybenzone, octinoxate, synthetic fragrance, or any scent that doesn’t fully disclose all fragrance ingredients. Ingredients cannot be tested on animals and must be biodegradable. Full details on the Beauty Heroes ingredient standard can be found online, along with a list of preferred ingredients or so-called ‘Superpower Ingredients’.

The 2021 Blue Beauty application deadline is November 25

Nominations and self-nominations are open through mid-November. And winners will, of course, be announced next year.

The 2020 Blue Beauty Awards presentation took place at this year’s INNOCOS summit in Scottsdale, Arizona (just days before the US began dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic in earnest). Aether Beauty won in the Zero Waste Beauty category, Kypwell won for Packaging Innovation, and three brands—Hanua Skincare, Teadora, and True Moringa—were recognized for their Innovation in Environmental Impact.
