Veriphy skin care brand’s collection has recently gained the attention of publications like Forbes due to its combination of science-backed ingredients and unique approach to unisex skin care product offerings. The collection, which features hero ingredient, PhytoSpherix, an innovative 100% plant-based form of glycogen, or phytoglycogen, offers hydrating and skin brightening benefits.
To learn more about the development of the Veriphy skin care collection, including challenges that needed to be addressed prior to launch, as well as the background behind designing a unisex skin care collection, we spoke with Alison Crumblehulme, co-founder of Veriphy, for her insights.
Formulation and development process
When the Veriphy team set out to develop and launch its skin care collection, which includes an eye cream, facial cleanser, toner, and moisturizer, formulators focused on incorporating “only clean, natural, and non-toxic ingredients that are free from parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and other harmful chemicals,” said Crumblehulme.
To stay aligned with this goal, Veriphy formulators decided to proceed with utilizing phytoglycogen-based PhytoSpherix as its hero ingredient as it is a “natural ingredient derived from plants that has been shown to have multiple benefits for the skin that helps to improve skin texture, boost collagen production, and enhance skin hydration,” she explained.
To ensure the collection’s efficacy, “Veriphy Skincare products are developed using the latest scientific research and validated by clinical trials, which allows them to create effective and innovative skincare solutions,” said Crumblehulme. As detailed on the company’s website, “in third-party clinical trials of PhytoSpherix, 97% of participants reported their complexion was more radiant, 93% reported their skin was silkier, and 90% reported their skin was smoother.”
Challenges to launch
However, the development process was not without its challenges, shared Crumblehulme. One difficulty was the initial process of selecting the right ingredients for final formulation, which “required extensive research and testing to find the right ingredients that are both effective and safe for use,” she said. These ingredients would ultimately include lactic and hyaluronic acids, cucumber and avocado, cannabis sativa oil, as well as arnica, calendula, green tea, algae, and licorice root extracts.
Having selected these key ingredients, the formulations underwent extensive testing. Said Crumblehulme, “once the ingredients were identified, Veriphy went through 158 formulations to get the right ones,” which was a time consuming but necessary process to prove product efficacy.
Additional challenges that needed to be addressed prior to launching the Veriphy skin care collection centered around the products’ manufacturing, marketing, and distribution. “The production of skincare products can be challenging,” she shared, “especially when it comes to maintaining consistency in batch production, adhering to quality control standards, and ensuring that the products are manufactured in a sterile environment.”
Further, she added, due to a “crowded skincare market, Veriphy Skincare had to invest in effective marketing strategies to differentiate themselves from other brands and establish effective distribution channels to make their products widely available to consumers.”
To overcome these challenges and more to bring the Veriphy collection to market, formulators had to prioritize “research, quality control, and sustainability in their product development and production process,” she explained. Ultimately, their efforts resulted in the creation of “a unique product collection that is effective, safe, and eco-friendly,” she said.
Designing a unisex skin care collection
When finalizing the collection prior to launch, Veriphy made several design considerations to ensure the final product would have a marketable unisex appeal. “Veriphy Skincare's products are unscented,” explained Crumblehulme, “which appeals to a lot of men.” Additionally, she shared, “they are also designed to be suitable for all skin types, regardless of gender.”
The commitment to inclusivity is an important foundational pillar of Veriphy’s brand awareness. “Veriphy Skincare's unisex approach to skincare has helped to promote inclusivity in the industry,” she said. “By developing products that are suitable for all skin types, regardless of gender, the brand has challenged the traditional gender-based approach to skincare,” which supports the brand in standing out against similar competitors.
So far, the design and commitment to unisex skin care product offerings has been well-received. “In addition to major new outlets like Forbes listing Veriphy as one of the top skincare lines for men, the brand received numerous testimonials from men who started trying their products,” said Crumblehulme.
