Chemicals company BASF has signed a distribution agreement with Global Essence to penetrate customers in North America for its menthol products.

Menthol has many flavor and fragrance applications including skin care and hair care products and with Global Essence based in New Jersey, BASF believes it is well situated to distribute products in the US.

In line with focus

"This agreement is in line with our focus on L-menthol, the new addition to BASF's citral value chain," said Andrea Wiese, North American sales manager of BASF's Aroma Chemicals Business Unit.

"Our agreement with Global Essence will contribute to our customers' success in North America."

Likewise, Global Essence also sees the value in the agreement as it adds a global supplier of specialty products to its portfolio.

"We are delighted to form this strategic alliance between BASF and Global Essence Inc., as it complements and enhances our portfolio of mint and mint related products, a core focus within our flavor and fragrance pallet," said Katrina Neale, president of Global Essence.

World Perfumery Congress

The agreement was signed on site at the World Perfumery Congress at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

BASF was exhibiting its line of aroma chemical products and rolled out its global launch of L-Menthol and DL-Menthol fragrance event.

The WPC event, held every two years, is a networking forum that attracts more than 700 fragrance industry professionals, their suppliers and marketers to address and discuss solutions to the industry’s latest challenges.

“L-menthol is the world’s largest-selling aroma and is essential in many personal and skin care products as well as perfumes,” said a BASF spokesperson at the show.

BASF has developed a unique production process based on the core intermediate Citral, which will enable the company to supply large quantities of an extremely pure product.

“The combination of high quality, global reach, local support and reliability of supply will revolutionize the worldwide availability of menthol products,” says aroma chemical unit vice president Miguel Peña.
