Cosmetics focus for DuPont Tate & Lyle with new preservative line
The new PolyGuard Preservative System features DuPont T&L’s proprietary Zemea Propanediol ingredient, which is a natural, 100 percent biobased ingredient made from corn sugar through fermentation and developed for use in the cosmetics and personal care market.
"The innovators in the cosmetic and personal care industry are increasingly demanding functional ingredients of natural origin that improve product performance," said Pete Colombo, account executive for DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products.
"We are pleased RML Incorporated chose to collaborate with DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products for the development of the PolyGuard preservative systems featuring Zemea propanediol."
New design
RML designed the new preservative line using Zemea to boost preservative efficiency along with its proven lack of irritation in cosmetic and personal care products in combination with the natural preservative, e-polylysine, which is derived through the fermentation of bacteria.
The PolyGuard line has two preservative blends – PolyGuard BA and PolyGuard CG. PolyGuard BA combines Zemea with other ingredients of natural origin – e-polylysine and benzyl alcohol – allowing for natural preservation in a safe and effective manner.
PolyGuard CG draws on RML’s experience in the marketplace producing caprylyl glycol based preservative systems by combining Zemea, e-polylysine and RML’s domestically produced and exceptionally pure caprylyl glycol. These materials are exclusively manufactured for RML by Hampford Research Incorporated.
Two ingredients
PolyGuard BA provides broad-spectrum preservation in a clear liquid with little to no odor allowing for use in a wide range of natural personal care materials.
While not derived entirely of natural materials, PolyGuard CG provides formulators with a preservative that is an alternative to parabens and formaldehyde releasers using the long-standing effectiveness of caprylyl glycol based systems.
DuPont claims formulators should consider PolyGuard BA for preservation in natural products, given that it is approved as a natural ingredient by Ecocert and the Natural Products Association; and is certified 100 percent biobased by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
